Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Amarillo - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings stranded their only four base runners in scoring position over the first eight innings in a 4-2 loss to the Amarillo Dillas Monday at Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

The WhiteWings (11-8) had seven base runners against Ryan Mitchell (2-0). In the first, Javis Diaz singled and stole second with nobody out. In the second inning, Eric Gonzalez was hit by a pitch in the second and reached second base with two outs. Jose Fulgencio drew a lead off walk and stole second right away in the third. Arlon Quiroz reached on a bunt-single in the seventh, snapping a streak of 13-straight batters retired by Mitchell, stole second and moved to third on a groundout.

With one out in the ninth, Salvador Paniagua reached on an error and Joel Roa doubled. After Mitchell recorded his tenth strikeout by getting Quiroz swinging, Gonzalez hit a two-run single to knock out Mitchell, but Tyler Pearson got Kevin Dietrich to bounce out to second base for his first save.

The Dillas (10-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Adam De La Garza singled and TJ Warren walked against Misael DeJesus (0-1). After a groundout advanced the runners, Daryl Jones grounded out to score De La Garza.

That was it against DeJesus, who only allowed that hit while striking out six and walking five in five innings.

The Dillas added three runs in the seventh against Freddy Ballestas. Kyle Hobbs led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. One out later, De La Garza hit a grounded to second that should have ended the inning, but Paniagua dropped the throw, allowing Hobbs to score. Warren followed with a single and Carlos Figueroa hit a two-run double to make it 4-0.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two of this four game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Stephen Whalen (0-1) is expected to face right-hander Ralph Roberts (0-2).
