WhiteWings Fall to San Angelo, 5-4

SAN ANGELO- Cory Patton's 3-run double to left centerfield off relief pitcher Eddie Dennis Jr. gave the San Angelo Colts their second straight come-from-behind victory against the visiting Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Friday night at Foster Field.

The WhiteWings led after the seventh inning stretch, 4-2. But starting pitcher Luis Noel started to tire and allowed singles to San Angelo catcher Michael Pair and centerfielder Ronnie Gaines.

At this point Rio Grande Valley manager Eddie Dennis replaced Noel, with Dennis Jr. (1-1) But the 6-5, 23-year-old righthander allowed another hit to second baseman Jason Diaz before retiring first baseman Daryl Jones.

With two outs, Cory Patton then hit a fly ball to the gap in deep left center that cleared the bases for his second such hit of the series.

The WhiteWings took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Fidel Hernandez drove in his North American Baseball League leading 30th run of the season on a sacrifice fly to centerfield and a Luis Sumozo single. Sumozo also drove in a run in the third inning to plate Hernadez.

After the Colts (17-17) scored two runs in the fourth inning on three walks and an error by second baseman Hernandez to make the score 3-2 Rio Grande Valley.

Leivi Ventura continued his hot hitting with a double in the sixth inning off starting pitcher Mike Hart (3-0), who scattered seven hits while throwing seven innings to earn the victory. But Ventura advanced to third and scored on groundouts by Sumozo and Ruddy Yan, respectively, to give the WhiteWings a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning.

Erik Draxton retired the side in order for his ninth save.

The WhiteWings (20-14) return home on July 4th against San Angelo at 6:35 p.m. for "Fireworks Night" from the City of Harlingen. C & C Wings will also sponsor a wing eating contest for two lucky fans and tickets will be discounted.
