Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats sported brand new pink jerseys and caps and performed like a different team in their 7-3 win over the McAllen Thunder on Friday night at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX. After losing three in a row and losing eight of their last ten games, the Cats finally picked up a "W" with some great hitting and once again, quality pitching.

Not often do you see a number nine hitter in the headlines, but for Fort Worth, catcher Derek Marshall was the main offensive provider in the game going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.

"I worked hard in BP on going the other way and staying through the baseball longer," Marshall said.

A more familiar name when talking about offensive production was right fielder Chuck Caufield who helped Marshall cross the plate on singles in the third and eighth innings.

"There's been a lack of confidence when you get in a little funk," Caufield said.

Fort Worth's pitching staff is probably the most relieved after finally getting some run support to complement their quality pitching. Starter James Giulietti (2-3) pitched six innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Giulietti struck out six and walked two batters. The Cats' bullpen would cover the last three innings, allowing only one more run on two hits.

"I feel like I had pretty good stuff, not great stuff, but I made it work," Giulietti said.

Thunder starter Demetrius Banks (2-2) suffered the loss with similar numbers to Giulietti going six innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Fort Worth banged up McAllen's bullpen including rookie reliever Spencer Trygg for three more runs on five hits.

Second baseman Mike Demperio seemed to be the only one who could give Fort Worth's hurlers any trouble, going 3-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. Demperio was the lone Thunder batter to reach on a base hit more than once.

With both Rio Grande Valley and Edinburg losing, Fort Worth moved one game closer to first with a record of 18-16 and sit 2.5 games back of the Roadrunners. McAllen's record falls to 12-23 and they remain at the bottom of the United League, nine games behind first-place Edinburg.
