
WhiteWings Fall to Red Hot Roadrunners

Harlingen - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings became the latest victim of the Edinburg Roadrunners' winning streak, losing 6-4 tonight at Harlingen Field, as the Roadrunners made it 10-in-a-row.
The Roadrunners (34-27) struck against Reymond Cruz (5-5) right away. Wilmer Pino led off with a single. Sergio Guerrero, who last played for Edinburg in 2001, hit a single in the first at-bat of his return. Pino moved to third and scored when Cruz made a wild throw to second to try to catch Guerrero, allowing him to go to third. Robert Matlock followed with a sacrifice-fly to make it 2-0.
The WhiteWings (28-33) responded against Pedro Flores in the bottom of the inning. Agustin Septimo led off with a single and moved to second on a fielder's choice error. Two outs later, Juan Melo hit an RBI- single to make it 2-1.
The Roadrunners got that run back in the top of the second. Vincent Blue and Bryon Smith led off with walks. Two outs later, Pino hit an RBI-single to make it 3-1.
Matlock hit a one-out single in the top of the third and Hunter Owen hit a two-out home run to make it 5-1.
In the bottom of the third, Rico Santana hit a leadoff single, Brian Nichols drew a four-pitch walk and Melo hit a two-run double to make it 5-3.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Santana walked and Nichols singled. Bryan Heaston came in and threw a wild pitch to advance the runners. Melo followed with an RBI-groundout to make it 5-4.
In the top of the fifth, Guerrero singled and Matlock walked. A wild pitch advanced the runners. Hereaud hit an RBI-single to make it 6-4.
That made a winner of Bryan Heaston (1-4), who pitched two and one- third scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out one.
Kelley Casares recorded the final two outs for his 10th save.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Left-hander Jesus Sanchez (4-1) is expected to face right-hander Tim Haines (6-4). Gates open at 6:05.
It's Thirsty Thursday, meaning $1 draft beers and $2 bottles of beer.
It is also Bargain Book Night and San Benito Community Night.
Additionally, the NBA Development League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers (minor league affiliate of the Houston Rockets) will be at the game raffling off a basketball autographed by basketball Hall-of-Famer Moses Malone. They will also be presenting fans with the opportunity to get exclusive admission to a Rockets autograph session during Rockets training camp at the McAllen Convention Center October 3- through-5. Vipers players Trent Strickland, Quin Humphrey and Stanley Asumnu, as well as members of the Snake Charmers dance team, will be signing autographs and taking pictures for free from the time the gates open throughout the entire game. Humphrey will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The Good Samaritan of Harlingen will also be set-up with free giveaways, including candy and anti-bacterial cream.
