
Colts avoid sweep, win 4-3

Harlingen, Texas---For the third consecutive evening, the outcome between the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (28-32) and the San Angelo Colts (39-21) was decided by a single run. For the first time in the series, The Colts were on the winning end. With a 4-3 victory in the final game of the series, the San Angelo Colts avoided the sweep.
It was a three-run third inning that put San Angelo in the drivers seat. Butch Ballez began the inning with a free pass. The Colts short stop moved to second base after a groundout by Jason Diaz. A ground ball back up the middle, off the the bat of Ronnie Gaines, scored Ballez and gave San Angelo the first run of the game. After an error and a walk, the bags were full of Colts for Nick Mahin. A shallow fly ball to left field dropped in between two WhiteWing outfielders scoring two, and San Angelo's lead was pushed to 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, a leadoff double by Rio Grande Valley's Brian Nichols, and a Colt error, put the Wings first baseman at third base with nobody out. A grounder to the left side by Juan Melo brought in Nichols and the contest stood at 3-1.
With one out in the sixth inning, Wings starter Carlos Artiles committed a fielding error allowing Hunter Jobes to reach base. The speedy centerfielder advanced on a pass ball, then stole third base. Travis Calloway sent a shallow fly ball to right field which fell for a hit, bringing home Jobes for a 4-1 tally.
RGV responded in the bottom half of the inning. Singles by Nichols and Welinson Baez set the table for Alberto Cruz.. It was a double to right center field by Cruz that scored Nichols, runners stood at second and third base. Juan Cabrera grounded out to score Baez. For the third night in a row the score was separated by just a run. San Angelo held a 4-3 advantage.
From that point on, the Colts bullpen returned to form; Doug Brandt worked a scoreless seventh inning, Jameson Maj followed with a perfect eighth and ninth inning. Maj had three strikeouts without allowing a hit; two of Maj's three punch outs were in the ninth. It was San Angelo's fifteenth one-run win of the season.
The winning pitcher was Colts starter Ezequiel Astacio (7-1). Zeke scattered nine hits over six innings, while allowing just two earned runs. The loss was credited to Carlos Artiles(2-3). Jameson Maj collected his third save of the season.
