
Roadrunners Win 10th Straight Behind Bullpen

HARLINGEN, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners extended their win streak to 10 games with a 6-4 victory over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Wednesday night at Harlingen Field. The Roadrunner's bullpen held the WhiteWings scoreless for the final five and two-third innings of the ball game.
Wilmer Pino got the game started with a single to left field and Sergio Guerrero followed with another single to left but as Pino was going to third the throw from left field hit him in the leg and got away from Welinson Baez to allow Pino to score. Robert Matlock followed with a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Guerrero from third giving the Roadrunners the 2-0 lead.
The WhiteWings (28-32) scored their first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Juan Melo that allowed Agustin Septimo to score from second to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Edinburg (34-27).
In the top of the second inning, Vincent Blue led off with a walk then moved to second on a walk to Bryon Smith. After a ground out moved both runners into scoring position, Pino singled to left that allowed Blue to score extending the Roadrunners lead 3-1.
Matlock hit a single to center field in the top of the third then came into score on Hunter Owen's fourth home run of the season making the score 5-1.
RGV scored two runs against Pedro Flores in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Melo that allowed Rico Santana and Brian Nichols to score making it a 5-3 game.
An RBI ground out by Melo in the fourth bottom of the fourth allowed Santana to score from third that cut the lead to 5-4 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Guerrero led off the Roadrunner's half of the fifth with a single to left and Matlock followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Carlos Hereaud followed with an RBI single that allowed Guerrero to score extending Edinburg's lead 6-4.
Bryan Heaston (1-4), Ricardo Serrano, Brian Martin, and Kelly Casares combined for five and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. Casares pitched the final two outs of the game for his 10th save of the season extending Edinburg's streak to 10 in a row.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play game two of this four-game series Thursday night at Harlingen Field. Tim Haines (6-4) is expected to face Jesus Sanchez (4-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
