WhiteWings Escape with Win in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO - Leading 4-1 after seven and a half innings, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings held off a late push by the San Angelo Colts to win 4-3 Wednesday at Foster Field.

The WhiteWings (19-25) struck against Chandler Barnard (2-2) right away. With two outs in the top of the first, Yeurys Tejeda doubled and Luany Sanchez singled to make it 1-0.

Welinson Baez hit his third home run of the season with two outs in the top of the second to make it 2-0.

The Colts (22-24) responded against Misael DeJesus (2-3) in the bottom of the inning. Jason Crosland led off with a pop-up in back of third that was dropped by Welinson Baez, allowing Crosland to go to second. One out later, Landon Camp hit an RBI-single to make it 2-1.

That was it against DeJesus, who struck out eight while scattering three hits and one walk in seven innings of work.

The WhiteWings got that run back in the top of the third. Kevin Griffin led off with a single and Tejeda reached on a fielder's choice to set-up an RBI-double by Sanchez to make it 3-1.

Javis Diaz led off the top of the seventh with an infield-single and scored on an RBI-double by Griffin to make it 4-1.

The Colts closed to within one in the bottom of the eighth. Butch Ballez reached on an error against Jason Moody. One out later, Mark Ramos hit an RBI-double to knock out Moody. Anderson Garcia came in, and after getting a groundout that moved Ramos to third, threw a wild pitch that allowed Ramos to score. Garcia slipped on home plate and had to be removed from the game. Roberto Rodriguez faced the next two batters, hitting Crosland and giving up a single to Josh Collazo. Eric Gonzalez moved from second base to the mound while Rodriguez went out to second base. Gonzalez got Camp to groundout to end the inning.

Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save. It was his 11th career pitching performance and his first since 2008.

The WhiteWings and Colts play game two of this four-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Luis Montano (3-3) is expected to face left-hander Aaron Cunningham (2-4).
