Laredo Broncos News Release

The Thunder (18-27) hit three, two run homers against Santo Hernandez and the Broncos (20-26) to take the 9-4 victory in game one of the scheduled double header at Veterans Field.

RHP Santo Hernandez (4-3) made his tenth start of the year for the Broncos in game one of the scheduled double header between the Broncos and Thunder at veterans Field. Opposing the Broncos was RHP Alex Fernandez (0-0), making his first start of the year for Coastal Bend.

Levy Ventura emphatically put the Thunder up 2-0 with a long home run that cleared the left center field wall in the top of the first against Hernandez.

The Broncos accepted the challenge when Jonathan Cisneros hit his first home run as a Bronco and third of the season, a three run shot that gave the Broncos the 3-2 lead for a brief moment.

In the top of the second Dustin Smith, with two out and an 0-2 count hit a double into the left center field gap that plated two runs and gave the Thunder the 4-3 lead.

Continuing the trend of scoring in every frame, the Broncos tied the game at 4-4 after D.j Dixon singled to start things off. Ryan Flynn laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Dixon to second base. Mike Murphy then hit a ground ball to first base that allowed Dixon to go to third base with two outs. Jason Diaz then hit a slow, dribbling ground ball that rolled right along the chalk line and stayed fair for an RBI infield single and the game was all tied up at 4-4.

In the top of the third the home run bug bit Santo Hernandez for the second time in the ball game. After retiring Levy Ventura on a foul out, he hit Brian Nichols to bring Alex Fernandez to the plate. Fernandez put one over the left center field wall for a two run homer that gave the Thunder a 6-4 lead.

The scoring slowed after the third inning. The Broncos sent only three men to the plate in both the third and fourth innings and scored in neither frame.

Santo Hernandez finally settled down in fourth inning. After he ended the third with two consecutive strikeouts he went on to retire nine in a row before allowing a walk in the top of the sixth, but held the Thunder scoreless in the inning.

The Broncos had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, with two outs D.J Dixon doubled to put runners on second and third for Ryan Flynn. Flynn hit a looping fly ball to right field that Alex Fernandez snagged on the run to end the inning, so the Broncos trailed 6-4 into the seventh inning.

Santo Hernandez began the seventh inning by allowing a single to Ron Fenwick. Levy Ventura then followed up with an RBI triple and Brian Nichols crushed a fastball over the fence in right center field to give the Thunder a 9-4 lead.

RHP J.J Trujillo came on in the bottom of the seventh and retired the Broncos 1-2-3 to secure the 9-4 victory for the Thunder in game one of the double header.

Tyler Friese picked up his first win of the season, pitching four shutout innings in relief of the starter Fernandez.
