Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Leading by one entering the ninth, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored eight times to beat the McAllen Thunder 13-4 on Thursday at Harlingen Field in front of a crowd of 2,006.
With one out against Luis Matamoros, Wilmer Pino doubled and David Peralta hit an RBI-single. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Alexis Hernandez hit an RBI-single. A wild pitch scored another run while advancing the other two runners. Gabriel Ortiz followed with a two-run single. Carl Johnson walked to knock out Matamoros, and one out later, Antonio DeJesus and Pino hit RBI-singles and Peralta hit an RBI-double against Bryan Smith to cap the inning.
Peralta finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
The Thunder (24-35) loaded the bases against Eric Blackwell (6-2) with one out in the top of the second. After Matt Redding struck out, Zach Mandelblatt hit a two-run double to make it 2-0.
That was it against Blackwell, who struck out five while allowing four hits and three walks in six innings.
J.T. Zink (1-2) retired 10 of the first 11 WhiteWings (33-26) batters he faced, but after Peralta reached on an infield-single and Leivi Ventura walked in the fourth, Edgar Trejo hit his seventh home run of the season to give the WhiteWings a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, Pino reached on an error and Peralta hit an RBI-double. After a wild pitch moved Peralta to third, Ventura hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
Mandelblatt homered off Julio Santana in the seventh to bring the Thunder within 5-3.
The Thunder scored another run off Santana and loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Edgar Martinez got pinch-hitter Adam Matos to pop-up before pitching a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 17th save.
The WhiteWings and Thunder complete this four-game series on Fan Fly-Away Friday, presented by Allegiant Air and McAllen International Airport at 7:05 p.m. One lucky fan will win two round-trip tickets on Allegiant Air. Right-hander Luis Chirinos (4-2, 3.20) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings. Gates open at 6:05.
