Fielders Drop Double Header to End Series at Calgary

July 28, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release

Calgary, Canada-July 27, 2011- After a two day break (a scheduled day off and a rainout), the Fielders went into Tuesday's double-header looking to improve after winning just 2 of their last 10 games.

In true Fielders fashion, they struck first scoring 3 runs in the first inning off a Mark Samuelson two-run double and an RBI single from Colin Moro. The Vipers, however, came right back at the Fielders and starter Josh Hildebrand in their half of the inning scoring 4 runs off of 5 hits to take the 4-3 lead.

Heading into the top half of the third the Fielders tied the game 4-4 on Moro's second hit of the game, a double, to score Franklin Lopez who reached on a single. After that, it was all Vipers. To start the bottom of the third inning, Hildbrand gave up 3 walks before giving way to reliever Trenton Lee. Combined, the two pitchers gave up 5 walks, 5 hits, and 9 runs.

Despite a stellar relief performance by Bret Severtson who threw 3 shutout innings giving up just 3 hits, the lead was too much for the Fielders to overcome. Vipers pitcher Edward Valdez went the distance in the seven inning game giving up just 7 hits and 4 runs to seal the 13-4 victory.

In game two the Fielders Jeremy Brewer faced off against Vipers starter Mark Michael in what turned out to be a real pitcher's duel. Over the course of the first 3 innings the two pitchers combined for just 3 hits.

The Vipers were the first to strike on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jimmy Rohan to plate Jonny Kaplan in the third. They continued to add to their runs and took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning when the Fielders threatened after Samuelson reached first after being hit by a pitch. Lopez followed up with a single to left field to move Samuelson into scoring position who was immediately brought in on a sacrifice fly by Chris Brown to put the Fielders on the board. Shortstop Brad Augustin then singled to right to give the Fielders two more base runners, but the threat stopped there as Brad Payne grounded out to end the inning.

Calgary would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 4-0 and earn the sweep. Brewer went four and one third innings giving up 6 hits, 3 earned runs while striking out 3 and walking 5. The Fielders left a total of 9 runners on base in the seven inning contest.

The Fielders start a 4 game series tonight at 7:05PM MT (8:05PM CT) in Edmonton before returning home on Tuesday August 2nd. You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
