WhiteWings end Roadrunners' win streak

Harlingen - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings became the first team to beat the Edinburg Roadrunners since August 2 with a 6-2 win tonight at Harlingen Field.

The Roadrunners (36-28) had won 12-in-a-row.

The WhiteWings (29-35) got on the board against Danny Rondon (4-1) with two outs in the second. Welinson Baez reached on an infield- single and Jose Torres hit a ground-rule double. Alberto Cruz followed with a two-run single to make it 2-0.

The Roadrunners struck against Juan Peralta (2-3) in the fourth. Hunter Owen drew a leadoff four-pitch walk. One out later, Vincent Blue had a hit-and-run single, moving Owen to third. Eric Gonzalez followed with an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 2-1.

Jose Torres led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Cruz followed with his tenth home run of the season to make it 4-1.

Nick Aranda and Wilmer Pino drew leadoff four-pitch walks in the top of the fifth. Robert Matlock reached on an error after attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Carlos Hereaud reached on an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 4-2.

That was it against Peralta, who scattered three hits and four walks in seven innings while striking out five.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Rico Santana walked. With two outs, Juan Melo and Baez hit singles to make it 5-2.

Against Bryan Heaston in the bottom of the eighth, Santana hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-run single by Baez to make it 6-2.

Julio Santana pitched two scoreless innings for his league-leading 16th save.

The WhiteWings travel to Laredo for game one of a four-game series with the Broncos tomorrow night at 7:35 at Veterans Field. Left-hander Carlos Artiles (2-3) is expected to face right-hander Gustavo Vasquez (2-1).
