Broncos lose in walk-off

Amarillo, TX - The Laredo Broncos and the Amarillo Dillas battled back and forth, but the Dillas picked up the win by a score of 7-6 at Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa, on Saturday. It was game one of a doubleheader.

The Dillas started the scoring in the first. Stantrel Smith started off with a triple and then scored on a single by Carlos Figueroa. The Dillas then loaded the bases with only one out, and Angel Reyes drew a walk to score Figueroa. That made the score 2-0 in favor of Amarillo.

The Broncos started their scoring in the second. Luany Sanchez led off the inning with a double. Mario Mendez followed with a single that moves Sanchez to third. The left fielder Stantrel Smith overran the ball on the single and Sanchez scored to make the score 2-1.

Laredo tied the game in the third. Luis Ugueto led off with a single, and then went to second on a sacrifice bunt by David Cardona. Juan Senreiso then knocked in Ugueto with a single. That tied the game at two.

The Dillas grabbed the lead right back in their half of the third. Anthony Bennett hit a rbi single that scored Terrance McClain. The Dillas now led by a score of 3-2.

Amarillo extended their lead in the fourth inning. Terrance McClain hit a two run single that scored both Stantrel Smith and Andrew Wong. The score was now 5-2.

The Broncos got back in the ballgame in the fifth inning. With one out, David Cardona doubled. Juan Senreiso then reached on an error by the shortstop Angel Reyes, which allowed Cardona to score. Argelis Nunez followed with a two run home run, his 13th of the season. Then with two outs, Mario Mendez reached on another error by Reyes. Andres Santos then hit a double the scored Mendez, and gave Laredo the lead by a score of 6-5.

Once again the Dillas answered back in their half of the fifth. Justin Wenger hit a sacrifice fly that scored Angel Reyes. The game was tied at six.

Broncos' starter Luis Arroyo was taken out during that fifth inning. He went four and a third innings giving up six runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits. He walked two batters and struck out five. Jason Herman finished up the fifth inning.

The Dillas threatened again in the sixth. They put runners on first and second with one out against Herman. Carlos Alvarez then came in for the Broncos to try to get out of the jam. Alvarez stuck out Trent Lockwood and got Angel Reyes to line out. The score remained tied at six.

Neither team did any damage in the seventh, as game one of the doubleheader went into extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth the Dillas leadoff man Stantrel Smith reached on a single. Then with one out he stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Jonathan Carillo. Fernando Rijo the reliever for the Broncos then walked Eric Brown and Terrance McClain to load the bases. The Broncos then brought in Franklyn Gracesqui to pitch out of the jam. Trent Lockwood hit a walk off single to beat the Broncos 7-6.

The Broncos scored 6 runs on 12 hits and had 3 errors while the Dillas scored 7 runs on 12 hits and had 3 errors.

The Broncos are now 21-42 on the season while the Dillas are 35-27. The Broncos will next be in action Saturday August 15th, as they play game two of a doubleheader against the Amarillo Dillas in Amarillo.
