Five-run twelfth inning secures Colt Victory

Robstown, Texas--- It was the longest contest of the year for the San Angelo Colts (41-22. A five-run outburst in the twelfth inning gave San Angelo their fifth extr-inning way of the season taking down the Coastal Bend Thunder(27-35) 8-3.

Thunder starter Toro Trevino sat down the Colts in-order until the top of the fourth inning. A leadoff single by Butch Ballez was followed by a drag bunt single by Hunter Jobes. Trevino returned to form and retired the next three hitters in order. The score remained knotted at zero.

Neither team nabbed the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning. The frame began with a leadoff single by Kevin Butler. A pick-off attempt by Barnard proved costly as the throw got past Josh Collazo, Butler advanced to second base. Dustin Smith laid down a sacrifice bunt to the third base side. Barnard opted for the put-out at third, Butler was called safe and runners secured first and third base. An RBI groundout by Michael Lewis scored Butler. It was a 1-0 Thunder lead. Coastal Bend plated another run in the seventh inning. After seven innings of play, San Angelo trailed by a run.

The Colts bats came alive in the eighth inning. A homer by Butch Ballez(4), and a two-run blast by Ronnie Gaines(8) gave the Colts a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, a triple by Manny Mejia, then a double by Carlos Rodriguez tied the game at three. The contest was sent to extra innings.

The extra-innings were stale until the top of the twelfth inning. San Angelo began the inning with two walks and a single; ducks were on the pond for Hunter Jobes. The Colts center fielder scorched a single down the right field line scoring Rhomberg and Lanto. Gaines delivered and RBI single adding the third run of the inning, and Bryan Frichter(6) slammed the door with a drive to left center field, a two-run shot, that sent the Colts to an 8-3 advantage. Doug Brandt (1-2) pitched the eleventh and the twelfth inning earning his first win of the year.

Chandler Barnard earned a no-decision pitching seven innings, scattering seven hits and one earned run. Tom Martin pitched .2 innings allowing one earned run. Jameson Maj worked two innings collecting three strikeouts. The loss went Carlos Rangel(1-4).

San Angelo and Coastal Bend will continue their four game series today at Fairgrounds Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Kemps pre-game show will begin at 6:50 pm.
