Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings (9-15) took an early 3-0 lead but couldn't hold on for the second-straight night as the San Angelo Colts (13-11) took the game 7-6 tonight at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings got things going right away against Logan Williamson (3-1). Bub Bergstrom led off with a walk and David Fowler walked. Kevin Griffin grounded into a fielder's choice to move Bergstrom to third. One out later, Griffin stole second and the next pitch went to the backstop, scoring Bergstrom and moving Griffin to third. He then scored on a Brian Nichols single to make it 2-0.
In the third, Griffin blasted his second home run of the season over the club house beyond the left field wall to make it 3-0.
Kenny Evoniuk (0-3) cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble with one out in the fifth. Aaron Cone and Charlie Beleu hit singles on the first pitches they saw. Tyron Pendergrass followed with an RBI-single. John Anderson grounded out to drive in Beleu. Bryan Frichter followed with a first pitch RBI-double and Andres Rodriguez capped the inning with a first pitch RBI-single to give the Colts a 4-3 lead.
The Colts got two more in the sixth as Jose Torres singled and Cone walked. One out later, Pendergrass and Anderson hit back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 6-3.
The WhiteWings got one back in the sixth when David Cardona reached on an infield single and later scored on an RBI-double by Bergstrom.
The Colts added a run in the eighth against Angel Cordero when Torres reached on an error, moved to third on a Cone single, and scored when Beleu hit into a double play to make it 7-4.
Argelis Nunez got that run right back in the bottom of the inning against Miliade Venas with a booming solo home run to left field, his third of the season.
The WhiteWings picked up a run in the ninth against Brian Daly when Bergstrom reached on an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Fowler, and scored on a Griffin single. Daly retired Ryan Fox for the final out and his sixth save.
The WhiteWings travel to Alexandria for the first of three tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Alex Gett (1-3) will face left-hander Chad Linder (1-1).
