San Angelo Colts News Release

HARLINGEN, Texas - The San Angelo Colts (12-11) scored four runs over the final three innings to win a see-saw battle with the Harlingen WhiteWings 7-5. The win, in front of 2,268 at Harlingen Field, evened the series at a game apiece and put the Colts at 4-1 on this six-game road trip.

With the game tied at 5-5 in the top of the ninth, Juan Jimenez (1-1) allowed a leadoff single to John Anderson, who was replaced at first base by Bryan Frichter when Frichter hit into a fielder's choice. At that point, Jimenez left the game in favor of Wings closer Caleb Balbuena, who gave up an RBI double to Andres Rodriguez on the first pitch he threw, giving the Colts a 6-5 edge. The next batter, Benny Craig, reached on an infield single and Rodriguez scored on the play when Balbuena made an errant throw to first, putting the Colts ahead 7-5.

Brian Daly then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to seal the win, picking up his fifth save. Ryan Mulle (1-1) faced the minimum in both the seventh and eighth innings with two strikeouts to record the win. Starter Brian Henschel received a no-decision, hurling six innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Trailing 5-3, the Colts made it a one-run game in the seventh when Tyrone Pendergrass walked, advanced to second on a bunt single by Anderson, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Frichter. Left-hander Dan Ziegler was charged with another run in the eighth when Wyn Diggs brought home a run with a sac fly, tying the game at 5-5.

Harlingen took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Terry Roblez, who scored two batters later when Amadeo Zazueta hit into a fielder's choice. San Angelo bounced back in the third to go ahead 3-2 off reliever Todd Lutz, who came in for emergency relief in the first when starter Dan Valentin left the game with an injury. Diggs started off the inning with his first professional home run, a solo shot to the opposite field. Charley Belew followed with a single and scored on an RBI single by Frichter, who then scored on the first of Rodriguez' two doubles. Those three runs were the only ones allowed by Lutz, who did a great job in relief, in 5 1/3 innings.

In the fourth, Zazueta and Bub Bergstrom each brought home runs with groundouts to give the Wings a 4-3 edge. Harlingen made it 5-3 in the sixth when Bergstrom singled home Zazueta, who singled and stole second.

The Colts conclude this three-game series in Harlingen with the series finale at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. The Colts then return to Foster Field on Sunday, June 8 to begin a nine-game homestand. The game that day, which begins at 5:05 p.m., will feature Weiner Dog Races, sponsored by Yuppie Puppy.
