Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they have signed infielder-outfielder Welinson Baez (6-3, 190), who also played for the team last year.

He takes the roster spot of Jose Sanchez (6-2, 200, Delaware State), who was released.

A 25-year old out of Bani, Dominican Republic, Baez hit .288 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 31 RBI in 57 games. Baez missed the final series of the regular season to obtain his United State citizenship.

Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2001, Baez advanced as high as Clearwater (Florida State League, Advanced A), where he hit .238 with six home runs and 30 RBI in 2007 and .216 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 2008.

Primarily a third baseman throughout his career, Baez's best season came in 2005 with Batavia (New York-Penn League, Short-Season A), where he hit .324 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 45 games.

Sanchez was hitting .278 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 16 games.

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that has sent two players to Major League Baseball in Edwar Ramirez (New York Yankees) and Robinson Cancel (New York Mets). In its fifth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, Robstown and San Angelo.
