San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, TX - The San Angelo Colts announced the signing of veteran outfielder David Cardona on Tuesday. Cardona, who spent the 2009 season in Laredo, is a nine-year veteran who has spent time in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays farm systems.

Cardona was an eighth-round draft choice of the Dodgers in 2001 out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. After spending three seasons in the Dodgers system, Cardona went to the Rays organization where he got as high as high-A Visalia of the California League.

After playing one game for Pennsylvania of the Atlantic League in 2007, Cardona has stuck around United League Baseball, playing for Rio Grande Valley in 2007 and 2008 before joining Laredo last season.

Cardona's best season was in 2003 while with the Dodgers' Pioneer League team in Ogden, UT where he hit .292 in 38 games with a homer and 14 RBI. Last season, David hit .254 for the Broncos with five homeruns and 30 RBI. He has a career lifetime average of .255 with 157 RBI.

Signing Cardona was necessitated by the recent injury to starting leftfielder Bradley Goldsmith. Goldsmith, who had just signed with the team this past Saturday, was placed on the inactive list today after tearing his hamstring in Monday night's game against Edinburg.

In three games with the Colts, Goldsmith had gone 2-12 with one RBI. The Richmond, TX native will be out indefinitely.

With tonight and Wednesday's games being rained out, the Colts won't return to action until Thursday when they take on the Broncos in Laredo. First pitch is at 7:35 as the Colts will send southpaw Aaron Cunningham (2-3, 5.76 ERA) to the mound against a to-be-determined starter against Laredo. The broadcast can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things started a 7:20. The Colts return home on July 5 to open a four-game series with a 7:05 contest against Edinburg. July 5 will also be Margarita Monday presented by MDX 106.1 FM. Margaritas will be served for only $2 throughout the evening. [image: ULB Logo.gif]
