HARLINGEN - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they have signed right-handed pitcher Herman Colmenarez (6-2, 184).
He takes the roster spot of starting pitcher Andres Rosales (6-0, 214), who has temporarily been deactivated while he attains his green card. The WhiteWings have also released right-handed reliever Jose Nieto (6-3, 205).
Colmenarez pitched for the Cincinnati Reds' Venezuelan Summer League affiliate at the ages of 18 and 19 in 2005 and 2006 respectively, combining to go 5-1 with three saves and a 2.69 ERA. In 77 innings he struck out 40 while walking 29 and allowing 75 hits in 43 games (three starts).
Nieto was 0-3 with a 4.77 ERA in five games (two starts). In 11.1 innings, he allowed 11 hits and eight walks while striking out one.
