San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - Starter Logan Williamson allowed only two runs over 6.2 innings, and the San Angelo offense belted three homers on the night as the Colts defeated the Roadrunners 7-5 to take the first game of a four-game series at Foster Field on Sunday evening.
Centerfielder Ronnie Gaines got things started by belting his ninth homerun of the year to lead off the first inning and give San Angelo a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, the Colts caught a huge break when Edinburg starter and League ERA leader Wardell Starling had to leave the game with an undisclosed injury. An inning later, third-baseman Landon Camp continued his hot-hitting with a two-run homer (19) to extend the Colts' lead to 3-0.
Things would stay that way until the fifth when San Angelo would plate two more runs on an RBI double from designated hitter Jason Landreth and an RBI single from right-fielder Alex Fernandez. The Colts extended their lead to 7-0 on a two-run homer by right-fielder Isaac Garcia (5) in the sixth for San Angelo's third homerun of the night.
The Roadrunners would finally get on the board in the seventh on a two-run single by right-fielder Nelson Teilon to cut the Colts' lead to 7-2. They would then make things interesting by scoring three runs in the ninth on RBI singles from leftfielder Robert Matlock and shortstop Wilson Batista, and an RBI fielder's choice by third baseman Carlos Hereaud to cut the San Angelo lead to 7-5.
But that was as close as Edinburg could get. With runners at first and third and two out, reliever Chace Vacek was able to strike out designated hitter Alex Hernandez to end the game.
Gaines led the Colts offensively by going 3-5 with a homer, double, single and run scored. Second baseman Mark Ramos and catcher Tyler Goodro each chipped in with two hits apiece. Second baseman Wilmer Pino, first baseman Daryl Jones, and catcher Osiel Flores each had three hits to pace the Roadrunners' attack. Despite 14 hits, the Roadrunners left 12 runners on base.
Williamson (2-2) allowed seven hits and struck out three over his 6.2 innings to get the win while Starling allowed one run in 0.2 of an inning to register the loss (7-2). Reliever Evan Cunningham allowed most of the damage for Edinburg as he gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out six in 4.1 innings of work.
The Colts and Roadrunners will go at it in game two of their four-game series Monday night with first-pitch set for 7:05. Brian Henschel (5-7, 6.11 ERA) will go for the Colts against Mark DiBernardo (6-5, 5.62 ERA) of the Roadrunners. Monday night will also be Margarita Monday presented by MDX 106.1 FM as margaritas will be on sale for only $2 throughout the evening. The broadcast of the game can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things underway at 6:50.
