Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - Down 5-0 after three innings, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored 11 consecutive runs to beat the Amarillo Dillas 11-7 tonight at Harlingen Field.
The Dillas (14-13) got on the board right away against Sendy Vasquez. Keanon Simon led off with a walk, moved to second and third on wild pitches, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rafael Ozuna.
In the second, Stantrel Smith doubled and Brian Bueno was hit by a pitch. A passed ball moved the runners up, and with one out, Simon was intentionally walked. Ozuna hit another sacrifice fly and Carlos Figueroa hit an RBI-single to make it 3-0.
Juan Diaz (3-2) took over for the WhiteWings in the third. He hit Andrew Wong and gave up a home run to Smith to start off his outing, but that would be it against him until the seventh.
The WhiteWings (12-15) failed to score against Dustin Taylor (2-3) the first time through the order, but hit-around in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Agustin Septimo led off with an infield single and Joaquin Rodriguez doubled to move Septimo to third. With two outs, Alberto Cruz hit a two-run double, Welinson Baez walked, Danny Etkin hit an RBI-single and Justin Holloway hit an RBI-single to make it 5-4.
In the fourth, Septimo reached on an error and Rodriguez singled. After Jonathan Poterson laid down a sacrifice bunt, Brian Nichols hit an RBI-single. After a wild pitch put Rodriguez at third and Nichols at second, Taylor intentionally walked Cruz to load the bases and set- up a double play. Baez drew a seven-pitch walk to force-in a run and Etkin grounded intoan RBI-fielder's choice to make it 7-5.
Eric Smith took over for the Dillas in the fifth, and after getting the first out on one pitch, he walked Rodriguez, Poterson and Nichols to load the bases. Cruz grounded into a fielder's choice to score Rodriguez and move Poterson to third. Cruz then took off for second and no one covered the bag for the Dillas, so catcher Brian Bueno's throw went into centerfield, allowing Poterson to score to make it 9-5.
Baez and Etkin led off the sixth with singles. After a Holloway sacrifice bunt, Casey Allen reached on an infield-single to load the bases. Septimo followed with a two-run single to make it 11-5.
In the top of the seventh, Trent Lockwood hit a leadoff single. One out later, Stantrel Smith singled. With two outs, Willie James singled to load the bases. Simon followed with an RBI-single to make it 11-6.
Against birthday-boy Ryan Dixon (26 years old) in the eighth, Terrance Mcclain hit a one out-double and Wong hit a two-out double to make it 11-7.
The WhiteWings and Dillas complete this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Juan Jimenez (0-1) is expected to face right-hander Richard Jessup (2-1).
