WhiteWings Bats Erupt in Series Victory Over Roadrunners

EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored six runs in the third and five in the fourth in a 15-6 victory over the Edinburg Roadrunners Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The WhiteWings (23-31) are now winners of three-straight after taking a series from the Roadrunners (33-20) for the first time this season.

Down 1-0 after two innings, the WhiteWings responded against Mark DiBernardo (5-3) in the top of the third when Welinson Baez led off with his third home run of the season to tie the game. Kevin Griffin followed with a triple and scored on a groundout by Javis Diaz to give the WhiteWings the lead. Roberto Rodriguez followed with a single and Yeurys Tejeda hit his sixth home run. Luany Sanchez singled and Welington Dotel doubled and Arlon Quiroz followed with a two-run triple to make it 6-1.

Griffin led off the top of the fourth with a single against Ricardo Serrano. One out later, Rodriguez singled, Tejeda hit an RBI-double, Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly, Dotel hit an RBI-single and Quiroz hit his eighth home run to make it 11-1.

The Roadrunners got on the board against Misael DeJesus (3-4) in the top of the second. Ambiorix Concepcion drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a single. One out later, Alexis Hernandez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 1-0.

Down 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Roadrunners loaded the bases with nobody out, but scored only one run on a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Pino that made it 11-2.

The WhiteWings added four runs over the final four innings against four different Roadrunners position players.

The Roadrunners scored three runs against Carlos Artiles in the bottom of the seventh and one against Tate Kelly in the bottom of the ninth.

The WhiteWings travel to Veterans Field in Laredo for the first of four with the Broncos on Monday at 7:35 p.m. Right-hander Luis Montano (4-4) is expected to face right-hander Santo Hernandez (5-3).
