Roadrunners drop doubleheader

EDINBURG, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners lost both games of the doubleheader to the Rio Grande Valley with scores of 9-4 and 4-3 Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

In game one, the WhiteWings (21-31) got the scoring started in the top of the first against Tim Haines (4-5). Javis Diaz led off the inning with a single then stole second base. After Roberto Rodriguez walked, Yeurys Tejeda hit an RBI double that allowed Diaz to score. A fielding error by the Roadrunners allowed Tejeda to score from third. Arlon Quiroz followed with an RBI double allowing Wellington Dotel to score from first giving RGV the 3-0 lead.

Alexis Hernandez got the Roadrunners (33-17) on the board with a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, cutting the WhiteWings lead 3-2.

In the top of the fourth, another fielding error by the Roadrunners allowed Eric Gonzalez to get to second. An RBI single by Wellinson Baez scored Gonzalez extending RGV's lead. With two outs, Rodriguez hit an RBI double scoring Baez from second making it 5-2 WhiteWings.

Edinburg answered back with another two-run home run from Hernandez which cut RGV's lead 5-4.

The WhiteWings scored four runs off of four hits against the Roadrunners pitching staff in the top of the seventh extending their lead 9-4.

Mickey Cassidy picked up his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings of the game and keeping Edinburg off the scoreboard giving RGV the 9-4 victory, their first against the Roadrunners.

In game two, Ambiorix Concepcion hit a two-run home run to get the Roadrunners (33-18) on the board in the first. Matlock followed with a walk and then stole second base. After Carlos Hereaud was walked, Alexis Hernandez hit an RBI single scoring Matlock from second making it 3-0 Edinburg.

RGV (22-31) answered with a run in the top of the second with an RBI double from Kevin Griffin that scored Arlon Quiroz from first cutting the Roadrunners lead 3-1.

Wellington Dotel started the top of the fourth with a single and moved to second on the throw to the infield. Quiroz then hit a two-run home run tying the game at three. Griffin then was hit by a pitch and Baez hit a single to left putting runners at first and second. Javis Diaz then hit an RBI single scoring Griffin from second and giving the WhiteWings the 4-3 lead.

Edinburg got the tying runner on bases but Luis Martinez got the final two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for his first save of the season giving the WhiteWings the 4-3 victory.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the fourth game of this series Sunday evening at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Mark DiBernardo (5-2) is expected to face Misael DeJesus (2-4) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
