
Barnard Ks Nine as Colts Take Series

San Angelo, TX - Colts starter Chandler Barnard tossed 7.2 sensational innings of baseball Sunday night at Foster Field, as San Angelo took the series against Coastal Bend by way of a 5-1 victory in front of 1,409 fans. The win allowed the Colts to take three of four games from the Thunder over the weekend.
The Colts started the scoring in the first on a RBI single from first-baseman Josh Collazo to take a 1-0 lead. Coastal Bend responded with a run in the third on a fielding error by shortstop Butch Ballez to tie the game.
Later in the inning, the Thunder would load the bases with one out, but starting pitcher Chandler Barnard got Coastal Bend right-fielder Alex Fernandez to line into a 4-6 double-play with third-baseman Levi Ventura being doubled up at second to end the threat.
San Angelo would then take the lead with two runs in the fifth on an RBI double from Collazo and an RBI single from third-baseman Landon Camp to make the score 3-1.
The Colts would then put the game away in the seventh on back-to-back solo homers by Collazo (9) and Camp (9) to give San Angelo the final tally of 5-1. For Camp, it was his 10th RBI of the series.
The Colts pounded out 13 hits on the evening as they were led by the trio of Camp, Collazo, and centerfielder Ronnie Gaines who each had three hits in the win. Collazo also drove in three runs to aid the Colts' cause. Coastal Bend was led by designated hitter Brian Nichols who went 3-4 with two singles and a double. For the series, Nichols went 8-15 with three homers and four RBI.
Barnard (4-2) got the win after allowing an unearned run on six hits while striking out nine and walking one in his 7.2 innings of work. The loss befell Frank James of Coastal Bend who went six innings allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out five. Though he did not get a save, reliever Gorman Romero came on in the ninth inning for San Angelo and proceeded to strike out all three hitters he faced on nine pitches to end the game.
The Colts will now hit the road for a huge four-game series with second-place Amarillo beginning Monday night at 7:05. Southpaw Aaron Cunningham (4-4, 4.83 ERA) will go for the Colts against Richard Jessup (2-3, 7.29 ERA) of the Dillas The broadcast of the game begins at 6:50 with the Kemps' Pregame Show and can be heard on 1260 KKSA. The team returns home on Friday, July 30 to begin an eight-game home-stand against Edinburg with first-pitch scheduled for 7:05. July 30 will also be the night of the Fan Fly Away presented by Midland International Airport. A lucky fan will win a pair of tickets to Las Vegas, while the runner-up will win a pair of tickets to Denver.
