Lancaster Stormers News Release
Patrick Stanley stretched his scoreless innings streak to 21 1/3 late Wednesday afternoon as the Newark Bears shut down the Lancaster Barnstormers, 6-0, at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Stanley (6-0) held the Barnstormers to four hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings while fanning six. He has not yielded a run since a one-out solo homer by the Barnstormers' Lance Burkhart on May 31.
It was not as if the Barnstormers did not have their chances to score. They put a runner into scoring position in each of Stanley's last four innings, and Lloyd Turner tripled to right off reliever J.J. Trujillo in the eighth. The club was foiled in each case.
After putting runners at first and second in the fifth on a leadoff walk to Ivanon Coffie and single by Jutt Hileman, Stanley needed only four pitches to escape the threat. He fanned Kyle Nichols on the first three, and Jarred Ball bounced into a 4-6-3 double play on the first pitch of his turn at the plate.
In the seventh, the Barnstormers got runners to first and third on a second walk to Coffie, a wild pitch and a one-out bloop hit down the right field line by Nichols. Stanley induced a pop up to third by Ball, and Trujillo came on to strike out Burkhart.
The closest Lancaster came to scoring was in the eighth, but second baseman Bobby Hill made a diving catch on a liner off the bat of Danny Gonzalez after the Turner triple. Manny Mejia grounded back to the mound, and another threat went by the boards.
Newark put constant pressure on the Barnstormers staff early in the game. The first three Bears singled off spot starter Paul Thorp (0-1) with Jose Herrera bringing Hill across on a perfectly executed hit-and-run for a 1-0 lead. League batting leader Cory Aldridge hit into a force play to drive in Ramon Castro with the second.
In the third, Herrera began a two-out salvo with a single into center. Aldridge banged a base hit to left, and Val Majewski delivered both with a long double to left center. John Pachot homered in the fourth, and Randall Simon scored the sixth Bears run with a two-out single to right in the fifth inning.
NOTES: Lancaster has managed only six runs on 18 hits in the last four games it has played in Newark...The Barnstormers are 6-19 on the road, 2-17 when not within eyesight of Pennsylvania...Mike Woods doubled in the fourth to extend a hitting streak to eight games...Turner has 17 hits in his last 47 at bats for a .362 average...Eric Ackerman (0-3) will start for Lancaster at 11:05 on Thursday against Mike Bumstead (4-4).
