COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - Luke Putkonen allowed only a pair of Mike McDade base hits over six scoreless innings, as the West Michigan Whitecaps (13-3) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (3-13), 5-1, on a rainy Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Two days after the Lugnuts and Whitecaps were rained out and a day after the two squads waited through a three-hour rain delay to play a doubleheader, a rain delay of an hour and 59 minutes backed up the start of the third game of their four-game series.

When the game began, Putkonen (1-0) took command, giving up only a double in the second inning and a single in the fifth inning to the Lugnuts' first baseman. McDade would finish the game with three hits in four at-bats.

Whitecaps first baseman Ronnie Bourquin provided all the offense his pitcher would need, lining a two-run triple off of Lansing starter Henderson Alvarez (1-3) in the midst of a four-run third inning.

In the sixth, Joe Bowen added a two-out RBI single against Alvarez to increase the Whitecaps lead to 5-0.

Lugnuts catcher Jon Talley doubled in teammate Yohermyn Chavez in the ninth to break up the shutout. Chavez, who had previously doubled in the inning, was named the Midwest League's Batter of the Week for April 20-26 earlier in the day.

As soon as the two-hour, six-minute game ended, the Fifth Third Ballpark field was quickly covered with the tarpaulin as another downpour began.

Lansing manager Clayton McCullough and left fielder Brian Van Kirk were each ejected from the game in the eighth inning by home plate umpire Matt Benham after Van Kirk was called out on strikes.

On Tuesday night, the two clubs play the finale in the four-game series. Left-hander John Anderson (0-1, 1.88) will start for the Lugnuts, opposed by Whitecaps southpaw Mauricio Robles (2-0, 2.81).
