Lugnuts' Chavez Named MWL Batter of the Week

BELOIT, Wis. - Lansing Lugnuts outfielder Yohermyn Chavez has been named the Midwest League's Batter of the Week for the week spanning April 20 - April 26, the league announced today.

In six games, Chavez notched eight hits in 19 at-bats for a .421 batting average, including one double, two triples, and three home runs. In the process, he scored seven runs and collected 10 runs batted in.

In his second year with the Lugnuts, the 20-year-old Venezuelan is currently leading the Midwest League in home runs (4) and is tied for first in extra-base hits (9) while ranking second in slugging percentage (.731) behind newly-promoted Jordan Newton of West Michigan.

Dayton Dragons pitcher Matt Fairel was honored as the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week for April 20-26.

In 2008, the Lansing Lugnuts had two different players, Manny Rodriguez and Matt Liuzza, and three different pitchers, Kyle Ginley, Nate Starner and Luis Perez, honored as MWL Players of the Week. Chavez is the first Lansing player to be so honored in 2009.
