COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - Following a three-hour rain delay, the West Michigan Whitecaps (12-3) swept a doubleheader from the Lansing Lugnuts (3-12), 3-1 and 4-2, on Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Lugnuts dropped to 1-5 in doubleheaders during the 2009 season, having just been swept in a twinbill at home by South Bend on Thursday, April 23.

In the opener, West Michigan starter Casey Crosby (2-0) allowed only one unearned run on three hits over five innings and Bryan Pounds went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, and a solo home run to lead the way for the Whitecaps.

Lugnuts starting pitcher Josh Wells (0-2) gave up three runs on six hits over five innings-plus to suffer the loss. Mark Sobolewski went 3-for-3 with three singles in the losing effort.

Brayan Villarreal pitched the final two innings for his first save.

In the nightcap, Pounds lined a three-run double in the third inning off of spot-starter Jonas Cuotto (0-2) to erase an early 1-0 deficit.

Whitecaps starter Matt Hoffman (3-0) picked up the win, striking out six batters while allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. Tyler Stohr held the Lugnuts scoreless in the seventh to earn his third save.

On Monday night, Lansing and West Michigan will play the third game in the four-game series. Right-hander Henderson Alvarez (1-2, 4.15) will start for the Lugnuts opposite Whitecaps right-hander Luke Putkonen (0-0, 2.08).
