Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Tyler Stovall hit a three-run home run and Matt Fairel tossed seven strong innings as the Dayton Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 8-1 on Sunday afternoon. Dayton established season-highs in runs, hits, home runs, and margin of victory in the contest. The Dragons have won two of their last three games.
Fairel (1-1) picked up his first professional victory by following a 12-strikeout performance in his last start Tuesday with seven solid innings. He allowed back-to-back doubles and South Bend's only run before a batter was retired in the first inning, but then did not allow a man past second base over the remainder of his outing. Fairel allowed five hits and one run with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Dragons scored three times in the second when Humberto Sosa singled, Jordan Wideman walked, and Stovall drilled his first home run of the season to give Dayton a 3-1 lead.
Neither club scored again until the Dragons got back on the scoreboard in the eighth. Sosa doubled to left and went to third on Wideman's ground out. Stovall followed with a single to left to drive in Sosa, picking up his fourth RBI of the day, as Dayton took a 4-1 lead. Dave Sappelt added a run-scoring double later in the inning and Cody Puckett followed with a two-run home run, his third of the year, to put Dayton ahead 8-1. The Dragons closed out the scoring in the ninth on Sosa's run-scoring double.
Dayton finished with a season-high 14 hits. Sappelt, Sosa, and Carlos Mendez each collected three hits while Puckett and Stovall had two.
Lance Janke followed Fairel on the mound with two perfect innings. He struck out two and did not allow a ball to leave the infield.
The Dragons meet South Bend at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Josh Ravin (1-1, 2.40) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Trevor Harden (2-1, 3.18). The Dragons next home game is May 5th against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Fifth Third Field.
