Whitecaps Pound Lansing, Sweep Doubleheader

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- Great all-around play from the West Michigan Whitecaps led to a double-header sweep of the Lansing Lugnuts, 3-1 and 4-2, at Fifth Third Ballpark. Tremendous starting pitching by Casey Crosby (2-0) and Matt Hoffman (3-0) set the stage for Bryan Pounds and the offense, and the defense of the 'Caps was equally outstanding.

Game one featured the lefthander Crosby taking the mound. Casey went 5 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 run, and 2 walks, to go with 3 strikeouts. Brayan Villareal worked 2 scoreless innings in relief.

Bryan Pounds led the hitting attack, collecting a double and his first homerun of the year. Jordan Lennerton was 3-3 with an RBI. 3B Pounds and SS Gustavo Nunez turned in several nice plays defensively.

Lansing scored their lone run in the fourth when Yoherman Chavez brought Tyler Pastornicky home on an RBI groundout.

In the nightcap, the Whitecaps sent another lefthander, Matt Hoffman, out as their starter. Hoffman worked 6 innings, surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 6. Again it was third baseman Bryan Pounds who paced the offense. Bryan was 2-3 with 3 RBI, including a base-loaded double to plate three teammates. Jordan Lennerton quietly continued his great night at the plate. He was 2-3 with an RBI to amass 5 hits over the doubleheader.

Brent Wyatt's leaping catch against the wall in left highlighted another fine defensive game for the Whitecaps.

The Lugnuts put a run on the board in the third with an RBI single by Van Kirk. And Lansing scored in the sixth when Yoherman Chavez tripled and Mark Sobolewski drove him home with a ground ball.

Tonight's game ticket can be exchanged for any home Whitecaps' game in either April or May.

These two teams will play game three of the series, Monday night at 6:35 p.m, at Fifth Third Ballpark.
