BATTLE CREEK - Three solo home runs off Whitecaps starter Andrew Kown proved to be the difference in a 4-1 Devil Ray victory over West Michigan.
It was the first time this season that an opponent has hit three home runs against the Whitecaps. However, Kown has allowed two or more homers on three occasions this year.
Patrick Breen hit the first shot for the Rays in the third inning. It was matched by West Michigan shortstop Brent Dlugach, who went deep in the fifth to tie the game, 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Devils Rays regained the lead, on three straight hits, including an RBI single by Reid Brignac.
Francisco Leandro and Fernando Perez each had home runs later in the game for Southwest Michigan.
Two Whitecaps runner were thrown out at home plate.
In the third inning, Jody Roughton was caught stealing on a failed squeeze play. He tried to knock the ball away from catcher Christian Lopez, who retaliated with a swing of the first, which missed Roughton. Both benches cleared but no one was ejected from the game.
In the fifth Matt Parrish was out in a collision at the plate on a throw from Breen in left, following a single by Andrew Graham. Parrish and Lopez exchanged words and the benches cleared for a second time, but once again no one was thrown out of the game.
Devils Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine went eight innings and allowed one run on six hits to earned the win and return to .500 at 4-4.
Ryan Bitter allowed the Whitecaps to load the Whitecaps to load the bases in the ninth, but got out of the jam on a double play to earn his sixth save.
Five in a Row: The Whitecaps have hit home runs in each of the last five game. It is the longest such streak of the season.
