Whitecaps Lose, 13-9

PEORIA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps let a five-run lead slip evaporate in the middle innings as part of a 13-9 loss to the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday at Dozer Park.

Leading 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Chiefs scored in each of their remaining at-bats, and 12 runs between the fourth to seventh innings, highlighted by four home runs to rally for their first win of the series.

Bryant Packard plated Trei Cruz on an RBI groundout in the first, putting the 'Caps on top 1-0. Whitecaps starter Keider Montero tossed three shutout innings on a pair of strikeouts as West Michigan plated four runs in the third - highlighted by a two-run home run from Austin Murr - taking the commanding 5-0 lead. Peoria responded in the fourth as L.J. Jones blasted a three-run home run, trimming the lead to 5-3. Murr roped a two-run double in the top half of the fifth inning before Peoria responded in the bottom half as Tyler Reichenborn smoked a two-run homer, slimming the lead to 7-5. Packard added his second RBI in the sixth before Carlos Soto added the third home run for Peoria, a three-run blast, tying the game at eight. Peoria poured on four runs in the seventh - featuring a two-run single from Thomas Francisco - before Todd Lott pounded the Chiefs fourth homer in the eighth, 13-9. The Whitecaps couldn't rally as Peoria closer Andre Granillo slammed the door to secure the Chiefs victory.

Peoria relief pitcher Nathanael Heredia (1-1) tossed 2.1 innings of relief in collecting his first win of the season, while Ted Stuka (0-3) gave up three runs in 0.2 frames out of the bullpen in suffering his third loss. The Whitecaps record falls to 28-32 while the Chiefs record elevates to 26-34. Despite the loss, the Whitecaps collected 14 base hits, and have now accumulated 32 hits in their last two games of the series. Jake Holton led the way offensively with three hits, and Austin Murr went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and four RBI in a losing cause.
