Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps overcame a late 2-1 deficit by scoring one run in the eighth inning and another in the ninth as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Wednesday night. The two teams have split the first two games in the series with the rubber match set for Thursday night.

The game was tied 2-2 going to the bottom of the ninth when West Michigan's Dylan Rosa lined a ball to the left field fence. Rosa reached second base, but when Dayton left fielder Reshard Munroe threw wildly back to the infield, Rosa advanced to third. Jordan Pearce then hit a fly ball to short left field that was caught by Munroe. Rosa tagged and scored on a very close play at the plate to end the game. The umpire's safe call brought an angry reaction from Dragons catcher Mark Kolozsvary, who thought he tagged the runner for the third out of the inning.

West Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Dragons tied the game in the fourth. Andy Sugilio got the Dragons started with a triple to center field and he scored on a single by Hendrik Clementina.

The Dragons took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Munroe walked with one out, stole second, advanced to third on the catcher's throwing error, and scored on Jose Garcia's ground out.

West Michigan scored one run in the eighth to tie the score against Dragons reliever Cory Thompson. The Whitecaps loaded the bases on a lead-off walk, an infield single with one out, a hit batsman to load the bases, and a sacrifice fly by Luke Sherley to bring in the run.

Dayton starting pitcher Packy Naughton was outstanding but not involved in the decision. He worked seven innings, allowing just one run on Rosa's solo homer. He gave up only three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Thompson (5-6) was charged with the loss as he gave up runs in both innings he appeared in.

The Dragons collected nine hits. Sugilio led the way with a double and a triple. Jose Garcia had two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games.

In the Standings: The Dragons fell to 24-35 in the second half with the loss. They are four and one-half games behind West Michigan in the Midwest League's East Division Second Half wildcard race. There are 11 games to play including seven home games for the Dragons.
