Bees Use Two Five Run Innings to Defeat Clinton

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (18-36,48-75) weren't able to finish their series against the Beloit Snappers after the finale was cancelled due to weather, so the Bees got to enjoy an extra off day. The rest seemed to pay off as the Bees offense erupted for 15 hits in the Bees 10-6 win over the Clinton LumberKings (25-33,64-64). Eduardo Del Rosario (3-4) did pick up his third victory of the season, despite allowing Clinton to score two runs, although the runs went towards starter Oliver Ortega, because the baserunners were his responsibly. Steven Moyers (4-1) suffered his first loss with the LumberKings, allowing five runs, three earned, eight hits, and struck out five in five innings of work.

Ortega walks in a run in the third

Clinton already had three hits going into the third inning, and Matt Sanders gave the LumberKings their fourth hit of the ball game after reaching on an infield single. Keegan McGovern then reached on a walk, and Onil Pena lined a single to left, but it wasn't enough to score Sanders, so the bases were now loaded with one out. Ortega did strikeout Dimas Ojeda for the second out but gave up a walk to Ariel Sandoval which allowed a run to score, giving Clinton a 1-0 lead.

Bees respond with five runs in the bottom half

Leonardo Rivas gave the Bees a baserunner in the bottom of the third on a one out single to left and got the lead soon after. Orlando Martinez crushed his second homerun of the season on a 1-2 count over the right field wall for his second homerun of the season, giving Burlington a 2-1 lead. The Bees kept the pressure going, as Kevin Williams Jr hit a double to right for his 17th of the season, and Spencer Griffin reached first after a fielding error by shortstop Johnny Adams to put runners on first and second.

Keinner Pina then drove in his first run of the evening on a single to right to score Williams Jr, giving Burlington a 3-1 lead. Moyers then tried to pickoff Pina at first, but Pena missed the throw and it went past him which allowed Griffin to score, giving the Bees a 4-1 lead. Pina also managed to make it to third on the error, and that allowed Tim Millard to drive in a run on a sacrifice fly to right, making the score 5-1.

Clinton bounces back with three in fifth

Ortega got the first two hitters of the inning out with no problem, but that didn't Clinton from having a big inning and getting back in the game. Ortega allowed Clinton to load the bases after Pena drew a walk, Ojeda reached on an infield single, and Sandoval drew a walk. Del Rosario then took over for Ortega, but he walked Adams, which allowed a run to score to make the score 5-2. Juan Camacho then lined a single to left, and that allowed Ojeda and Sandoval to score, making the score 5-4 Bees. Connor Hoover then loaded the bases again on a walk, but Del Rosario managed to get Billy Cooke to fly out to center, allowing the Bees to hold the lead.

Pina's big triple helps Bees pad lead

Cam Williams started the inning by reaching first on a walk, and Rivas got Williams all the way to third on a single to right for his third hit of the game. Martinez then drove in his third run of the game on single to right, giving the Bees a 6-4 lead. Martinez would also steal second for his fourth stolen base of the season, and Griffin drew a walk to load the bases.

After a pitching change by the LumberKings, Pina stepped up to bat and delivered the biggest hit of the game. Pina hit a liner to right field, that would get him his second triple of the season and also score all three baserunners to give the Bees a 9-4 lead. Millard gave the Bees their tenth run of the game on an RBI single to right, giving him his second RBI of the game.

Clinton's late rally not enough

Mayky Perez threw a clean inning in the eighth but ran into problems closing things out in the ninth. Perez gave up a leadoff walk to Zach Scott and then Sandoval sent a double deep to center that allowed Scott to score from first, making the score 10-5. Camacho drove in his third run of the night on a line drive into right, making the score 10-6. Perez was able to regain his composure though, and ended up striking out the next two hitters, giving the Bees a 10-6 victory.

Multiple Bees have big games

After going 4-5 with an RBI in the Bees Sunday win against the Snappers, Orlando Martinez proved that game wasn't just a random hot night. Martinez finished tonight's game 3-5 with a homerun and drove in three runs. Martinez is currently on a five game hitting streak and is hitting .368 in the month of August. Martinez has also played in 18 total games and has had a hit in 14 of them. Leonardo Rivas also had a career day, going 4-5 at the plate, making it his third career game with four hits and his first since August 4th of 2015. Millard was just 1-4 but did have two RBI's and Pina was the player of the game, going 2-4 with a triple, and driving in four of the Bees ten runs.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will continue their series with the LumberKings tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm. Clinton is expected to start Clay Chandler, who is 8-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 16 starts. The Bees are expected to give another start to Austin Krzeminski, who is 5-5 with a 1.90 ERA in three starts and 37 total appearances. Krzeminski is coming off a great start, where he threw five shutout innings and allowed just one hit against Wisconsin.
