Camels Rall E for Walk-Off Win
August 22, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - For the third time in nearly three weeks, Chris Roller was the walk-off hero at Dow Diamond. His single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth scored Romer Cuadrado and Deacon Liput for a 2-1 victory for the Great Lakes Camels against the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Wednesday.
The TinCaps (27-30) seemed certain to take home the win until Dylan Coleman (L, 1-2) loaded the bases without getting an out. Fred Schlichtholz replaced him, got an out and then allowed the walk-off to Roller.
The Camels (29-30) are now in outright possession of the top second-half Midwest League playoff spot, as the West Michigan Whitecaps are 0.5 game behind Great Lakes and the Fort Wayne TinCaps are 1.0 game back.
In the top of the sixth, Gabriel Arias reached on a fielding error by second baseman Devin Mann, which allowed Owen Miller to score for a 1-0 TinCaps lead.
Great Lakes called up Jose Chacin up from Rookie-level Ogden on Wednesday and started him the same day against Fort Wayne. Giving up the unearned run, Chacin finished with one run on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.
Tom Cosgrove, Fort Wayne's starter, was absolutely dominant. He did not allow a run while only issuing five base runners - three hits and two walks - in 6.0 innings. The left-handed 20-year-old struck out seven. Working in relief of Cosgrove, lefty Dan Dallas struck out three hitters in the seventh inning. The impressive aspect of his strikeout of the side was that it took just 10 pitches.
Roller, who executed the walk-off single, finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Cuadrado went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Despite going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, committing three errors and stranding nine players on-base, the Camels worked out a miraculous win.
Camels reliever Stephen Kolek pitched the top of the ninth and secured his second win of the season.
The Loons return to face the TinCaps at Dow Diamond on Thursday for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
