Whitecaps Drop First of Road Trip

July 30, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps opened their longest remaining road trip of the 2019 season with a 4-1 loss to the South Bend Cubs Tuesday night in front of 4,781 fans at Four Winds Field.

The Whitecaps, who opened an eight-game road swing, were unable to gain ground on the Cubs for the Midwest League Eastern Division wildcard - which now they trail by six games with 33 games remaining.

Brennan Davis opened the scoring with an opposite-field two-run homer in the first inning, giving South Bend a 2-0 lead. Davis' shot was his seventh of the season. After allowing the home run, "Caps starter Wilkel Hernandez cruised through four scoreless innings while striking out six. In the sixth, Parker Meadows plated Wenceel Perez with a run-scoring groundout to trim West Michigan's deficit to 2-1. In the bottom of the frame, the Cubs loaded the bases with none out before the Whitecaps evaded trouble by getting out of the jam without allowing a run highlighted by a "1-2-3' double play to end the threat. In the seventh, Davis struck again with a run-scoring single for his third RBI of the ballgame to give South Bend an insurance run and 3-1 advantage. Luke Reynolds added an eighth-inning run with a towering solo homer to right field off the Four Winds Field video board to bring the lead to 4-1 and end the scoring in the contest.

Cubs pitcher Peyton Remy (3-4) struck out six batters and allowed just one run in collecting his third victory. Whitecaps starter Wilkel Hernandez (7-6) took a tough-luck loss - his sixth of the season despite allowing only one earned run and striking out six in five innings. Sean Barry retired the final four "Caps hitters to collect his fifth save of the season. West Michigan falls to 35-71 in 2019, 14-23 in the second half and have lost five of their last six. The Cubs improve to 57-48 and 20-17 in the second-half standings. Whitecaps infielder Andre Lipcius reached base three times with two singles and a walk in a losing cause.
