White Wings Start Series With Win

San Angelo, TX - Starter David Cross pitched six innings of two-run ball in leading the Rio Grande Valley White Wings to a 7-2 victory over the San Angelo Colts on Tuesday night at Foster Field.

The White Wings broke out on top in the first inning on a solo homer by shortstop Yeurys Tejeda (3), before second baseman Mark Ramos would tie

the game in the third for San Angelo on an RBI single.

However, Rio Grande Valley would take control of the game in the fifth by plating four runs.

The scoring started on an RBI double by first baseman Joel Roa, which gave the White Wings a 2-1 lead.

The lead extended to two on an RBI double by centerfielder Javis Diaz before an RBI groundout by leftfielder Kevin Griffin made the score 4-1.

Rio Grande Valley would complete the scoring on a RBI double by catcher Luany Sanchez to give the White Wings a 5-1 advantage.

Adam Hale tried to get the Colts back into it by blasting a solo homer in the sixth, his seventh of the year, to cut the deficit to three, but Rio Grande Valley was too much as second baseman Eric Gonzalez would single in two runs in the seventh to give the White Wings their biggest lead of the game at 7-2.

From there, the Rio Grande Valley bullpen would shut down the Colts' offense the rest of the way en route to the victory.

Rio Grande had six different players with RBI.

Gonzalez led the way by going 2-5 with two RBI while Tejeda also went 2-5 with a homer, RBI and two runs scored.

Diaz chipped in by going 2-5 with a double, RBI, and stolen base.

Hale led the way for the Colts by going 3-4 with a homer, double, and RBI.

Cross (2-5) got the win going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits as the Colts left a whopping 14 runners in on base.

Ezekiel Astacio (3-4) suffered the loss for San Angelo after allowing five runs in six innings of work despite striking out eight.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow for game two of this series with first pitch set for 7:05.

The Colts will trot out Chandler Barnard (2-1, 4.96 ERA) against Misael DeJesus (1-3, 6.05 ERA) of the White Wings.

The broadcast gets underway with the Kemps Pregame Show at 6:50 and can be heard on 1260 KKSA.

Wednesday will also be Sure-Win Wednesday sponsored by Sherwin Williams.

If the Colts don't win that night's game all fans in attendance will receive free admission to the next Wednesday home game on August 4 against Laredo.

In addition, Wednesday's game will be preceded by a Youth Clinic courtesy of Wal-Mart as Colts players and coaches will teach members of Casey's Kids Club skills and fundamentals to become better baseball players.

for participants and their parents while the clinic should run from 5-6.
