Broncos Ride the Right Arm of Jeff Jamnik for Win

The Broncos scored three runs in the bottom of the first and their starter Jeff Jamnik pitched eight solid innings, allowing just four hits and one run, while picking up ten strikeouts and his first victory of the season as the Broncos defeated the Thunder 8-1 in game one of the series.

RHP Jeff Jamnik (1-1) made his third start of the season and 15th appearance of the year overall against LHP Doug Brandt (2-3) for the Thunder.

The Broncos offense gifted Jamnik a lead in the bottom of the first against Brandt. Jason Diaz led off the game with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Flynn. Kenny Gilbert then picked up his 46th RBI of the season with a single and the Broncos had a 1-0 lead. Salvador Paniagua came to the plate and hit his tenth home run of the season, and first as a Bronco to give Laredo a 3-0 lead after one inning.

David Fowler led off the bottom of the second with a walk, followed by a Mike Murphy single. Jason Diaz then bunted both runners over and Ryan Flynn picked up RBI number 23 of the season with a ground out to make the lead 4-0 Broncos.

The Thunder got their lone run in the top of the third against Jamnik when Mike Lewis doubled follwed by a single that moved Lewis to third. Ron Fenwick then hit an RBI ground out and the score was 4-1 Broncos.

Four runs was more than enough offense for Jeff Jamnik on this night. Jamnik threw eight innings allowing four hits and one run for the Broncos and earned his first victory of the season. Jamnik walked one and struck out ten, in an absolutely dominating performance in his third start of the year. At one point in the ball game Jamnik retired 15 straight Thunder hitters from the fourth through the eighth innings.

The Broncos added some insurance in the top of the third when Salvador Paniagua hit his second home run of the game and 11th of the season to tie Levy Ventura and Brian Nichols for second in the league and push the Bronco lead to 5-1.

Another insurance run for the Broncos came in the bottom of the sixth when Jonathan Cisneros started off the inning with a double and came home to score on the Ryan Flynn RBI single, his second RBI of the game to extend the Bronco lead to 6-1.

A few more insurance run came in the bottom of the eighth for the Broncos when Mike Murphy hit his first extra base hit for the Broncos. Jason Diaz then reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second for Ryan Flynn. Flynn came through again, picking up his third RBI of the game with a single to make the score 7-1 Broncos. Kenny Gilbert then reached on an infield single that allowed Jason Diaz to come home from third and give the Broncos the 8-1 lead.

LHP Thomas Vessella (0-0) came into the game in the ninth inning and allowed a lead off double to Levy Ventura before retiring the next three Thunder hitters and securing the 8-1 Bronco victory.

The Broncos and Thunder will play a double header tomorrow night with first pitch for game one at 5:35 PM and game two starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
