Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In conjunction with the Chicago White Sox, the Birmingham Barons announced a pair of roster moves Thursday afternoon, which included the promotion of Top 50 prospect Nick Madrigal to Birmingham.
Madrigal, ranked as the No. 43 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, owns a .272 clip at the plate with two home runs 27 RBI and 17 stolen bases across 49 games with Class-A Advanced Winston-Salem.
The 22-year-old second baseman, whom the White Sox selected with the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft, batted .389 with two RBI through 10 games of Spring Training with the White Sox.
Madrigal helped guide Oregon State to the 2018 NCAA Championship and followed with an impressive pro debut across three levels of the White Sox system. The organization's No. 4 prospect posted a collective .303 average with 16 RBI and eight stolen bases through 43 games split between the AZL White Sox, Class-A Kannapolis and Class-A Advanced Winston-Salem.
Across his final 78 plate appearances with the Dash, the 2018 Pac-12 Player of the Year struck out just once. He paced the Carolina League with a minuscule 2.8 percent strikeout rate for the season.
In a corresponding move, the Barons transferred second baseman Mitch Roman to Winston-Salem. Roman owned a .165 clip at the plate with one home run and 12 RBI across 40 games with Birmingham in 2019.
The White Sox selected Roman in the 12th round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Wright State.
Following the roster moves, Birmingham's active roster remains at 25 players with nine players on the injured list and one player on a rehab assignment.
The Barons return to the diamond Thursday night as they conclude a six-game series with the Jackson Generals. First pitch in the series finale is set for 7:05 p.m. CT at Regions Field.
