LAST GAME: Birmingham, Ala. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, could not withstand the repeated blows of the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday, falling 4-3 at Regions Field. The Barons (23-36) prevented the Generals (34-25) from gaining ground on the division-leading Montgomery Biscuits, who now hold a one-game advantage in the North Division at press time.

TODAY'S PITCHING MATCHUP: Jackson welcomes back a former General, Joel Payamps, who has not pitched for the Generals since last July. Payamps made one start earlier this year for Triple-A Reno, throwing four innings in April before going on the IL. Payamps matched a Jackson franchise record last year with 14 Ks against Birmingham on July 3. He faces left-hander Kodi Medeiros, who has spiraled downward to an 0-8 record and a 7.75 ERA this year, a far cry from the 3.60 ERA he recorded last season. Medeiros has not won any of the 16 starts he has made at Birmingham since being traded from the Brewers to the White Sox last July.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE: Fresh off two consecutive wins as the Tennessee Turfgrass Association's Pro Field of the Year in 2017 and 2018, The Ballpark at Jackson is once again competing for widespread acclaim. In round 2, The Ballpark at Jackson is up against a well-known foe, the Montgomery Biscuits' Riverwalk Stadium. D-BACKS RECOGNIZE RILEY: Generals right-hander Riley Smith earned commendation from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization this week as their organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May. Smith finished 2-1 in 5 May starts with a 0.53 ERA that led the Southern League. He also finished the month on a streak of 18.0 innings without an earned run allowed, providing a reliable arm for Blake Lalli and Doug Drabek in a month when Jackson went 17-12.
