Atlantic City Surf News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ_ The Atlantic City Surf (7-8) fell to the Somerset Patriots (8-8) 6-5 on Tuesday night at a fog filled Sandcastle Stadium. The fog created difficult field conditions as several balls fell in for both teams that outfielders never saw. In the end it was the Patriots scoring a run in top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie to win the game.
The fog played a major rule in the Surf coming back from a four run deficit as they scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Surf first baseman Dario Delgado drove in two runs with a fog assisted triple and catcher Kevin McDonald went two for three with a RBI and a run scored.
The Patriots were led by third baseman Jason Nettle's four for four night, with a RBI and run scored. First baseman Paul Ottavinia went two for five and knocked in Victor Rodriguez for the game winning run.
Surf starter Marty Barnett allowed four runs, two of them earned, on eight hits in seven innings while striking out three. Reliever Ponce Deleon (1-1) picked up the loss, giving up two runs in his two innings of work. Matt Carnes started for the Patriots and pitched eight strong innings, allowing five runs but only two of them being earned. The league strike out leader struck out six while allowing ten hits. Reliever Matt Schwager (1-0) recorded the win with a scoreless ninth.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 6:35, with fireworks to follow the game sponsored by NovaCare. The Surf will start Andy Zwirchitz versus Somerset's Justin Jensen. Thursday's game starts at 11:05.
