
Former Major Leaguer Reggie Harris returns to the Bears

Newark, NJ, May 25 â The Newark Bears have announced the signings of former Major Leaguer, right-handed pitcher Reggie Harris and infielder Jerson Perez. Both will be in uniform this evening when the Bears take on the Camden Riversharks in a 6:35 game at Campbell's Field in Camden. The Bears have also announced the release of pitcher Gerry Oakes.
The 35 year-old Harris last played professionally in 2003 when he pitched for the Bears. With the Bears in 2003 he was 0-1 with a 1.74 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 18 games. Harris, who has 86 games of experience in the Major Leagues, previously played for the Bears in 2001 where he was 1-1 with 6 saves in 10 games.
Originally a first round selection of the Boston Red Sox in 1987, Harris was also apart of the Oakland A's, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers big league teams where he compiled a 2-3 record and a 4.91 ERA.
The 27 year-old Perez joins the Bears after playing most recently for Baton Rouge in the Southeastern Independent League in 2003 where he recorded a .302 batting average with 33 RBI and 51 runs scored in 67 games. Perez, who is entering his ninth year in professional baseball, was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 1996 draft. He has spent time in both the Mets and Toronto Blue Jays minor league systems spending 63 games at the triple-A level between the 2001 and 2002 seasons with Toronto.
