Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 16, 2014) - Andre Wheeler made his third straight scoreless start, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 6-0 shutout victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday at NewBridge Bank Park.
Wheeler extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings of work with 5.0 shutout frames. He faced the minimum through the first three innings, allowing a hit and a walk but following both with a double-play ball to erase the baserunner. Wheeler (3-3) gave up two hits and two walks while striking out four to earn the win. He last allowed a run on July 25 in Hagerstown.
Andrew Mitchell followed with 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one. Matt Abramson tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth for the save (6).
Kannapolis broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth. Jeremy Dowdy, who walked to reach base, took off from first on a hit-and-run with Toby Thomas at the plate. Thomas laced a line drive over the head of left fielder Austin Dean, scoring Dowdy for a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, Eddy Alvarez singled through the right side of the infield, and Christian Stringer followed with a triple to plate Alvarez for a 2-0 lead. Stringer later scored on a Greensboro error for a 3-0 advantage.
Danny Hayes broke the game open with two outs in the ninth inning, lining a bases-clearing double down the left field line to score Carl Thomore, Chevy Clarke and Ryan Leonards for a 6-0 lead.
Cody Crabaugh (4-3) faced the minimum through four innings, allowing a double to Chevy Clarke in the second inning, but Clarke was thrown out trying to swipe third. He struck out the side in the fourth, but gave up a run in the fifth and couldn't get through the sixth. He finished after 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in a loss.
Greensboro's Jose Arias tossed 2 and 1/3 scoreless relief innings, allowing an inherited runner to score, and Miguel Del Pozo gave up three runs on three hits in the ninth.
The Intimidators wrap up this 4-game series in Greensboro on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park as RHP Robinson Leyer (5-8, 3.31) takes the mound for Kannapolis against Greensboro's RHP Domingo German (8-2, 2.56). The Intimidators return to Kannapolis on Tuesday for a 3-game series against the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies).
