Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hickory, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds suffered a 6-2 defeat as a ninth inning rally ended abruptly against the Hickory Crawdads on Saturday night. Drew Dosch set a new club record with a single in the 9th inning, now with 151 hits on the year, the most ever by a Shorebird in a single season.
Stellar starting pitching has dominated the series. On Saturday night, Hickory right-hander Tyler Smith owned the game with seven shutout innings. The Crawdads' starter allowed just three hits in a superb start.
Meanwhile, Hickory edged out to a sizable lead against Shorebirds' starter Bennett Parry. A two-out error committed by Drew Dosch allowed Hickory to score one run in the second. In the third inning, Joe Jackson lifted a sacrifice fly and Jairo Beras lined an RBI single to make it 3-0.
The Crawdads hit a pair of solo home runs off reliever Nick Cunningham. Jairo Beras and Ronald Guzman each went deep to make it 5-0. Hickory added another in the eighth, as Nik Nowottnick made his Shorebirds' debut.
Delmarva rallied in the ninth, but ultimately fell short. Drew Dosch singled to left field, his 151st base hit of the season, setting a new Shorebirds' record for hits in a season. Dosch surpassed his manager Ryan Minor, who recorded 150 hits in the 1997 season for Delmarva. A double by Creede Simpson set up an RBI grounder by Chance Sisco. After an error and a swinging bunt kept the inning alive, Hickory went to their closer Jose Valdespina. The reliever immediately induced a game-ending double play.
Smith improved to 7-4 with his seven shutout innings in the start, while Valdespina earned his fifth save. Parry dropped to 1-2 in his three starts with Delmarva, while the Shorebirds fell back under .500 as a team, now 62-63.
The Shorebirds will go for a series win at Hickory on Sunday evening. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (6-2, 3.74) starts for Delmarva against Crawdads' righty David Ledbetter (5-6, 6.09). First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm at L.P. Frans Stadium.
