Calgary, Alberta -- The Brandon Wheat Kings looked to Saskatoon Thursday morning, selecting highly touted center Brayden Schenn with their first choice (9th overall) in the 2006 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

A brother of Kelowna Rockets' defenceman Luke Schenn, the 6' 175 lb. forward scored 65 goals and 108 points in 43 games with the Saskatoon Bantam AA Generals this past season.

Luke Schenn was Kelowna's first round pick (20th overall) in the 2004 bantam draft in Calgary.

"This kid has real good hockey sense and vision," says one WHL scout. "He has real good touch around the net."

Schenn was one of five Saskatoon born players to be chosen in the opening round. Among the others - defenceman Jared Cowen - who was selected by the Spokane Chiefs first overall.

Choosing second, the Red Deer Rebels opted for Vancouver center Landon Ferraro, son of former Brandon Wheat Kings' scoring great Ray Ferraro.

The expansion Chilliwack Bruins made Ryan Howse of Prince George their first ever pick, taking the 15-year old left-winger third overall.

Rounding out the top five - Prince Albert chose Cole Penner of Medicine Hat at number four while Kamloops general manager Dean Clark nabbed Jimmy Bubnick of Saskatoon fifth overall.

Two Manitobans were chosen in Thursday's opening round - center Cody Eakin went to Swift Current sixth overall while left-winger Jason Garder was taken by the Tri-City Americans with the eighth overall pick.

The draft continues throughout the day in the Round-up Center (Stampede Park). For complete draft-day results, be sure to check out www.whl.ca
