Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Calgary, Alberta - The 2006 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft has come to an end at the Round-Up Centre (Stampede Exhibition Park) in Calgary and for the second time in three years, the Wheat Kings looked to the province of Saskatchewan with their first round selection.

The Wheat Kings, who had their first top-ten pick in five years, had the ninth overall selection in the opening round and used that pick to take 6' 175 lb forward Brayden Schenn of Saskatoon. A brother of Kelowna Rockets' defenceman Luke Schenn, Brayden is coming off a brilliant season that saw him score 65 goals and 108 points in 43 games with the Saskatoon Bantam AA Generals.

Two years ago, Brandon used the eleventh overall pick to grab defenceman Keith Aulie of Roleau. Schenn becomes the seventh Saskatchewan born bantam to be chosen in the first round by the Wheat Kings, joining the likes of Wade Redden (1992), Aaron Goldade (1995), Wade Skolney (1996), Mike Wirll (1997), Brett Dickie (1998) and Aulie. Schenn's older brother Luke, was chosen by Kelowna in round one (20th overall) of the 2004 bantam draft.

In the second round, Brandon chose 5'11" 155 lb. center Scott Glennie (29th overall) of the Winnipeg Bantam Monarchs. Like Schenn, Glennie (featured on front page of web site) is coming off an outstanding season that saw him finish second in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA Hockey League scoring race with 25 goals and 63 points.

Of the thirteen players chosen by the Wheat Kings - there was one goalkeeper, four defenceman and eight forwards. The top Manitoban chosen was Cody Eakin (6th overall to Swift Current) while Brandon defenceman Brock Sutherland was the top western Manitoban to be selected, going in the fifth round to the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Spokane Chiefs, who finished last in the 20-team circuit, had the first overall selection in today's proceedings and opted for highly touted defenceman Jared Cowen - one of five Saskatoon products to be chosen in round one. Red Deer then chose Vancouver center Landon Ferraro, the son of former Wheat Kings' scoring great Ray Ferraro. Rounding out the top five - the expansion Chilliwack Bruins took Ryan Howse of Prince George third overall, Prince Albert then selected Cole Penner of Medicine Hat, followed by the Kamloops Blazers selection of Jimmy Bubnick of Saskatoon with the fifth overall pick.
