Calgary, Alberta - The Brandon Wheat Kings looked to Saskatoon and Winnipeg this morning, selecting highly touted centers Brayden Schenn and Scott Glennie in the opening two rounds of the 2006 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

A brother of Kelowna Rockets' defenceman Luke Schenn, the 6' 175 lb forward was chosen 9th overall, while Glennie, a 5'11" 155 lb center went in round two (29th overall).

Schenn is coming off a brilliant season that saw him score 65 goals and 108 points in 43 games with the Saskatoon Bantam AA Generals. Glennie meanwhile finished second in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA Hockey League scoring race with 25 goals and 63 points.

In round three, the Wheat Kings used the 50th overall selection to take 6'2" 170 lb. defenceman Brody Melynchuck of Balgonie, Saskatchewan. Melynchuck played the 2005-06 season with the Notre Dame Hounds.

Schenn was one of five Saskatoon born players to be chosen in the opening round of today's draft. Among the others - defenceman Jared Cowen - who was selected by the Spokane Chiefs first overall. Choosing second, Red Deer opted for Vancouver center Landon Ferraro, son of former Wheat Kings' scoring sensation Ray Ferraro. The expansion Chilliwack Bruins made Ryan Howse of Prince George their first ever pick, taking the 15-year old third overall. Rounding out the top five - Prince Albert chose Cole Penner of Medicine Hat while Kamloops drafted Saskatoon's Jimmy Bubnick.

Two Manitobans were chosen in Thursday's opening round - center Cody Eakin went to Swift Current sixth overall while left-winger Jason Gardner was taken by the Tri-City Americans with the eighth overall selection.

The draft continues throughout the day in the Round-Up Center (Stampede Park). For Live up to date results, visit www.whl.ca
