Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings won two of three games this past weekend to move to within striking distance of top spot in the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference.

Following back to back home ice victories on Friday and Saturday nights against Eastern Division rivals Swift Current and Moose Jaw, the Wheat Kings dropped a disappointing 3-2 decision to the Pats in Regina on Sunday night. Jordan Eberle's goal with 4:37 remaining in regulation time was the difference as the Pats snapped Brandon's season high 4-game win streak.

Following the weekend, the Wheat Kings sit in third place in the division and fifth in the Conference with a record of 11-7-0-1, good for 23 points. Brandon is three points behind the Eastern Conference leading Pats with one game in hand.

Rookie Brayden Schenn and captain Daryl Boyle scored in a losing cause Sunday night for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Pats 24-23. The goal was the sixth of the season for Schenn, the hockey club's first round draft choice in the 2006 WHL bantam draft, and it also extended his point scoring streak to four games and capped off a terrific weekend for the former Saskatoon AAA Contact. Schenn scored once and set up two others in Saturday night's impressive come from behind 6-3 victory over the visiting Warriors, snapping Moose Jaw's 11-game unbeaten streak.

Meanwhile former Medicine Hat Tiger Matt Lowry assisted on Boyle's second period shorthanded goal, extending his point scoring streak to six games and giving the 19-year old Neepawa product a point in sixteen of his last 17 games. Lowry had a career high 10-game point scoring streak snapped during the club's recent west coast road trip.

18-year old goalkeeper Joe Caligiuri suffered Sunday's loss, snapping his personal 3-game winning streak, stopping 20-23 shots.

After playing three games in three nights - for the second straight weekend - the Wheat Kings will have a few days now to prepare for this weekend's 2-game home stand that will see the Wheat Kings host Brandon Lockerby and the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday night and the Pats on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets for both games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

In off-ice news, members of the Wheat Kings will be visiting JR Reid School on Tuesday to have lunch with members of that school's safety patrols. In addition to providing lunch from Subway, the players will be signing autographs and distributing complimentary tickets to this Friday's WHL game, compliments of Manitoba Public Insurance and the Brandon Sun.
