Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings trimmed their pre-season roster Monday afternoon as they continue to prepare for their 2009-10 Western Hockey League opener this Friday night in Prince Albert.

16-year old goalkeeper Liam Liston was reassigned to the St. Albert AAA Midgets of the Alberta Major Midget Hockey League while 18-year old defenceman Brett Rock was released. The Red Water, Alberta product is expected to join the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

A former eighth round draft choice of the Wheat Kings in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft, Rock appeared in three pre-season games this year, finishing with two minor penalties.

Liston meanwhile appeared in one of Brandon's four exhibition games, compiling a 4.00 goals against average. Liston was the Wheat Kings' third round pick (57th overall) in last year's Bantam Draft.

As a result of Monday's moves, the Wheat Kings have 31 players on their roster, including six that are still away at National Hockey League Training Camps. Of the players still in Brandon, 19 are forwards, nine are defencemen and three are goalkeepers - veteran Andrew Hayes, former Edmonton Oil King Dalyn Flette and 17-year old rookie Ty Rimmer.

The players still away at NHL camps include Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles), Scott Glennie (Dallas), Colby Robak (Florida), Alexander Urbom (New Jersey), Matt Calvert (Columbus) and Finnish born right-winger Toni Rajala, who continues to recover from an off-season knee injury in Edmonton. Brandon's first pick in June's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft was the Oilers' four round selction in this year's NHL Entry Draft in Montreal.

The Wheat Kings, who finished with a 3-1-0 pre-season record, will kick off the season this weekend with games in Prince Albert and Regina on Friday and Saturday nights. Brandon's Home Opener is on Friday, September 25th vs. Swift Current.
