Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have announced plans to go ahead with their bid to host the 2010 Memorial Cup.

Thursday's announcement came on the heels of an approval by City Council to contribute 2.5 million dollars to upgrade the Keystone Centre and $400,000 as a portion of the profit guarantee.

The Wheat Kings, who would receive an automatic berth into the Cup as the host team, will now submit a letter of intent to bid to the WHL Friday, with the finalists to be announced on August 28th.

Bid presentations will be made to the WHL Board of Governors on October 15th, with the successful bid to be announced that same day.

The Provincial government had already pledged its support to share with the city the cost for the bid guarantee and capital improvements needed at the Keystone Centre in order to qualify for the tournament. An event that could bring primetime national exposure to the city and result in a multimillion-dollar economic impact to Brandon.

Since joining the Western Canada Hockey League in 1967, the Wheat Kings have attended three Memorial Cup Tournaments - Montreal (1979), Kamloops (1995) and Peterborough (1996). Brandon also played the Montreal Royals for the 1949 Memorial Cup title.
