Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Calgary, Alberta -- The Brandon Wheat Kings moved into sole posession of first place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division Friday night with an impressive 6-3 victory over the hometown Calgary Hitmen before close to 10,000 fans at the Penngrowth Saddledome.
The win, coupled with Saskatoon's 4-3 Overtime loss to the visiting Swift Current Broncos, pushed the Wheat Kings one point up on the second place Blades to close out the month of January. Saskatoon, however, does have four games in hand.
A big third period Friday night was the story in Brandon's latest victory. The Wheat Kings erupted for five goals to erase a 2-1 second period deficit en route to their fifth straight win, including four consecutive during this week's road trip that saw Brandon score victories in Saskatoon, Cranbrook, Lethbridge and Calgary.
Scott Glennie continued his torrid scoring pace Friday, firing two goals and setting up another to extend his personal point scoring streak to six games. The Dallas Stars' first round draft choice has six goals and 15 points during this recent stretch of games.
Matt Calvert, Brayden Schenn, Aaron Lewadniuk and Colby Robak, with what turned out to be the game winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the third period, also scored for the Wheat Kings, who improved their record to 35-16-0-3, good for 73 points.
19-year old Calgary product Jacob DeSerres outdueled Hitmen goalkeeper Martin Jones, turning aside 26 of 29 shots. Jones, who was a member of the Silver Medal winning Junior Team in Saskatoon, made 21 saves in a losing cause.
The Wheat Kings return home Saturday and don't play again until Wednesday night when they play host to the Red Deer Rebels. Tickets for that game are available at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
In other Wheat King news, the deadline for minor hockey teams to enter the 5th Annual Rogers Fan Camp contest is Sunday, January 31st. The four winning teams will be announced on Monday, February 1st.
